It’s sobering how often these patterns show up in church communities and how well they work. I think so many of us were taught to assume the best, to trust leadership, and to value humility and service. All good things. But as you said, these tactics can be incredibly effective when used strategically. I’m grateful you see it, too.
The 8th commandment explanation is used as a club on those who dare to bring up behavioral and doctrinal issues. They ignore the Large Catechism, where it states that evil must not go unpunished and that preachers are obligated to deal with it, and if they do not they are sinning.
I have seen all of these tactics used very effectively, especially in the church.
